The ZOO is located in the town centre on a sandstone hill called Pastýřská stěna, surrounded by a town wood park.
It is reachable by walk, by car or by lift from the left bank of the river Labe. The ZOO was established in the year 1948; open to public was one year later.
The ZOO mainly concentrates on species, which are rarely bred in Czech zoological gardens. It participates in the Committee for breeding of rare cockatoos species and also breeds rare and endangered species of Czech nature, such as heath grouse, capercailzie and owls. The most significant species are: Grizzly bear, jaguarondi, big raven, Lori species and cockatoos.
